history of the breed
The Chinese Shar-Pei, an ancient and unique breed, is thought to
have originated in the area around the small village of Tai Li in
Kwantung province, and existed for centuries in the southern provinces
of China. They were used to hunt wild game, and herding, companions to
peasant farmers, protectors of home and property. In China any dog that
protects property is called a fighting dog, where in America they are
called guard dogs. With the on set of Mao Tes-tung and the Communist
Party in China, ownership of dogs was levied heavy taxation. The dog
population of China was essentially eliminated. In 1973, Matgo Law a
Hong Kong breeder, appealed to dog fanciers in the U.S. ''Save the
Chinese Shar-Pei''. A few caring individuals took these wonderful dogs
into their hearts to start a breeding program in hopes of saving this
wrinkled breed, and formed The Chinese Shar-Pei Club of America which
held its first meeting in 1974, the first National Specialty Show was in
1978, and Shar-Pei was accepted into the A.K.C. Non-Sporting Group in
1991. Known as the sharkskin dog, the name Shar-Pei literally means
sand-skin, roughness and shortness. The Shar-Pei shares another
distinctive characteristic with only one other breed, the Chow Chow, in
having a blue-black tongue. Proof of ancestor relationship is difficult.
The intelligence of the Shar-Pei is remarkable. They are natural guard
dogs. Today these ''Wrinkled Dogs'' are becoming more common as people
discover what a wonderful companion they really are.
general appearance
The Chinese Shar-Pei is an alert, dignified, active, compact dog of
medium size, varying from 18'' - 20'' at the withers (shoulder) and
weighing 40 - 55 pounds. It is square in profile, with a tail that sits
high on its rear with a curl or curve over the body. The body is cobby
or square, with a medium thick neck, and broad, deep chest. The coat is
only solid colors, but may have shading of the same color, primarily
darker down the back and on the ears, comes in two acceptable types the
'horsecoat' and the 'brushcoat', which can be up to 1'' long at the
withers. Both coats are harsh to the touch, hence the name sand-skin.
The well proportioned head, is very distinctive with its 'hippopotamus'
muzzle, slightly but not overly large, proudly carried and covered with
profuse wrinkles on the forehead continuing into side wrinkles framing
the face and covering its black tongue, flews, scissor bite, and its
unique wrinkling of the body. The ears are small, thick, triangle in
shape, edges may curl. Ears lie flat against the head, pointing toward
the eyes. Eyes are dark small, almond-shaped and sunken, displaying a
scowling expression. The gait is free and balanced with the feet
converging on a center line in a vigorous trot. As a puppy grows older,
it looses much of the wrinkling over the body, retaining only the
wrinkles in the head and neck area, and sometimes on the legs and feet.
temperament of the Shar-Pei
The Chinese Shar-Pei tend to be protective of their families,
loyal, devoted to the ones they love. They generally are very
affectionate to children and love to be told they are wonderful. Their
primary role is that of a beloved and protective companion. A Shar-Pei
responds well to praise, but can be very stubborn if it gets the upper
hand in a household. They are a dominant breed, stand firmly on the
ground with a calm, confident stature, but not aggressive, unless backed
into a situation that requires them to protect their loved ones. They
can be a couch potato, regal, alert, dignified, lordly, scowling, sober
and snobbish, essentially independent and somewhat standoffish with
strangers. Because of their high level of intelligence they are
extremely easy to train, including housebreaking. They are a clean
breed, with little grooming. All in all, they make a wonderful family
dog. They often have a quirky sense of humor and love to have their
families laughing at their playful antics. With a Shar-Pei in the house,
life is never dull. A word of warning - they are like potato chips -
it's hard to have just one - they become addictive and you want to have
more!
